About Penhold

Penhold, Alberta is a small town on the edge of Alberta's forested foothills. It has always been a place of change and is now evolving into a hub for the arts in Western Canada.

From the beginning, Penhold's economy was based on forestry and agriculture. The forests on the edge of town were harvested by loggers, then trucked out to markets all over Alberta and Canada. As a result of extensive logging, deposits of minerals began to be revealed and some people would stop over on their way west to pan for gold.

Since the 1950s, Penhold has also attracted many artists who have found inspiration there. They found a welcoming community of artists with an appreciation for what the arts can offer people in an area that is not well-known for cultural activity.

The town came alive with A&W restaurants and grocery stores, dance studios, and automotive repair shops.
