About Sylvan Lake

Sylvan Lake is the largest town in the County of Wetaskiwin with a population of approximately 2,500. It is located northeast of Edmonton and boasts an expansive area that includes many different community features nestled on a strip between the North Saskatchewan River and Blackie Lake/Crosby Creek.

 

The Town boasts a rich history and continues to have an active population due to its proximity to Edmonton which provides employment opportunities but also represents a recreational hub for many people in the surrounding area.

 

Sylvan Lake was first established as a settlement in the 1890s by the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR). At that time it was named 'Crossing Lake' and included two train stations, a sawmill and several residential buildings. The community's name changed to Sylvan Lake around 1911 when a real estate agent used the name because it had a pleasant ring to it. Many people of Germanic descent settled in the area, both Catholic and Lutheran (see Community Groups), which led to the construction of St.

Sylvan Lake is a town within the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo in northeastern Alberta, Canada. It is surrounded by boreal forest and aspen parkland typical of the aspen forests that cover much of northern Alberta.

Sylvan Lake is home to three separate breweries which offer regular tours for the curious explorer. The Whistler Brewing Company is located at 10 Lakeview Dr., and features a menu of pub style food, a microbrewery and a number of events throughout the year including open mic nights. This brewery is truly one of Sylvan's best kept secrets.

 

The Brew Brothers Brewery is also located in Sylvan Lake Town and holds regular live music shows. Additionally, the brewery offers nightly food specials as well as an outdoor patio.

Shopping in Sylvan Lake

 

It is easy to see why most of the shops in Sylvan Lake are open year round. The town has a lot to offer for those who want to shop for anything from groceries, clothing, and antiques.

 

Shopping in Sylvan Lake Town can be a little bit hard but with these tips below, you should have no problem finding what you need without any issues whatsoever! 

-Check the hours before heading out so that you will know if your desired store is going to be open that day.

Transportation in Sylvan Lake

 

Buses run along the south shore of Sylvan Lake and bus stops are located across from the boathouse. The majority of buses will pass by up to 8 times a day. The cost is $2 per adult and $1 per child under 12 years old.

Fares can be paid in cash or with a credit card at the ticket machine by Divisadero’s Pond or at any Community Centre on Lakeshore Drive East .

 

Buses provide service to [town] and surrounding communities (Nampa, Sylvan Lake, Lacombe, Turner Valley). They also run from May to October routes through the Sylvan Lake area.

The route is 4:00 p.m. - 9:30 p.m.: Weekdays and Saturdays / 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Winter Route

During the winter season, buses provide service between Sylvan Lake and Lacombe , while roads are closed due to snow.

During other times of the year buses provide a once-hour service with pick-up points generally at either end of the lake.

Natural Attractions in Sylvan Lake Town

 

Sylvan Lake is set in the heart of beautiful Canada, in the majestic Rocky Mountains. The town was originally founded as a railway service stop and then grew into what it is today. Sylvan Lake has something natural to offer everyone!

 

Hiking: Sylvan Lake is home to over 250 kilometers of hiking trails - with hikes ranging from easy strolls to more challenging treks. There are also three major hiking trails right in town: the Sylvan Trail, Cedar Loop and Green Belt Trails. All of these trails are maintained by the City's Parks, Recreation & Culture Department. You will find maps of these trails throughout town and at recreation centres.

 

Sylvan Lake also offers numerous walking routes around the town. These include the Sunken Intersection (see photo below), which brings you to the Sylvan Lake Sunnyside Trail. The trail follows a ridge of hills for about 2 KM around Sylvan Lake, taking you through a beautiful forest along the way. There are benches along the way to stop, rest and take in the beauty of this trail.

 

Other walking routes around town include the Lakeshore Path, which follows Sylvan Lake's southern shoreline. You can also see four historical stone lookout towers on this path - one in each corner of the lake. The trails continue westward to the shores of Sundance Island and beyond.
