And if you perfect to take it easy during your vacations, there's miles of beautiful beaches and waterfront restaurants and piers to sunbathe to the sound of crashing waves. Situated just north of Malibu, Ventura beaches have fantastic surf spots all along the coast and are at their very best in the early morning. Plus, Ventura is the best winter surf location in the continental US, rivaling San Clemente and Huntington Beach as Surf City. The most popular spot among locals is C Street, or Surfer’s point, and is a hotspot because of its wave quality, favorable wind direction, friendly atmosphere, rider capacity and point break. Kitesurfing conditions are consistently good and water temperature doesn’t vary a significant amount. You’ll especially want to visit during the summertime south-west or south swells. Kite surfers will also love the wintertime, when the sun shines on the water for kitesurfing and snow has fallen around Lake Tahoe for snow-kiting. Plus, there's plenty of opportunities for kayaking, canoeing, paddle boarding and riding pedal boats around the harbor for a more relaxing ocean adventure.

 

Ventura also offers miles of bike paths, with trails ranging from beginner all the way to a more adventurous rider and everything in between. Take a relaxed seaside ride along the State Beach on our promenade while taking in the refreshing sea air, or take a ride up the coast on the new Rincon bike trail which features a decorative railing perfect for photos. There's also the Ventura River Parkway which is a network of parks, open space, and trails that provide opportunities for recreation, education and stewardship of the Ventura River. Many side trips provide access to the river and creeks as well as scenic overviews of the watershed, and the Ventura River Trail runs from Main St. in Ventura’s historic downtown to Foster Park 6.3 miles inland. The trail is perfect for hiking and exploring, and features an impressive wall of sedimentary layers exposed by the Ventura River, active and abandoned industrial sites, and operating oil derricks.

 

Ventura is also a hub for outdoor events like the oldest and beloved tradition of the Ventura County Fair! You can look forward to beachside rides like a Ferris wheel that overlooks the ocean, great sunset viewing and stargazing, nightly beachside fireworks and music concerts. Other popular beachside events include the Ventura Beach Marathon, Pier Under the Stars, the Aloha Festival and the Surf Rodeo, combining surfers, cowboys and bikini-clad cowgirls for a weekend of corn hole, surf and bikini contests paired with 25 world class bands.

 

 

Food 

Ventura’s dining scene thrives thanks to Artisan chefs establishing eateries that celebrate California’s abundance of fresh local seafood, produce, and eclectic fare. With wine country in our backyard, acres, and acres of fresh crops grown locally, and multi-cultural influences, it’s no wonder visitors head back there year after year to pair the beautiful natural terrain with some world-class eats. Starting in the historic downtown area, the choices are almost overwhelming. When you crave classic American food, Busy Bee Cafe is the old-fashioned diner that offers just that, and staying true to its 50’s theme, jukeboxes and a checkered floor will take you back in time. Whether you go for breakfast or dinner, you’ll find out what all the buzz is about! For more favorites, head to Nature’s Grill, where you’ll find Cobb salad, chicken avocado sandwiches, and veggie stir fry. Some other local favorites include: Brophy Bros. Restaurant & Clam Bar, Himalaya Restaurant, Wood Ranch BBQ & Grill, Cafe Fiore, The Cave and the SPASSO Cucina Italiana.

 

Ventura is home to many breweries, award winning wineries with spacious tasting rooms as well as distilleries using delicious fresh local ingredients. Off Market Street located in the heart of Ventura is the perfect place to start tasting local libations. Four wineries including Four Brix Winery, Plan B Wine Cellars, and Panaro Brothers Winery are all minutes from each other offering tasting rooms and a wide range of wines. Plan B’s Second Sunday Supper party takes place monthly in their roomy tasting room and patio area, and this event is a great way to taste all of their wines while taking in the music and gourmet treats. With a total production of under 2,000 cases a year, Four Brix wines are in high demand, so you're in luck if you get a chance to step into their tasting room, order a pizza and one of their many outstanding blends. There's plenty of other wineries in the area, each offering great tours, tastes and unique set-ups perfect for a relaxing day among some of California's finest vineyards.

With such a breathtaking natural terrain, it's no wonder many who visit Ventura, camp it. Look forward to excellent private campgrounds as well as great dry camping at public parks.
