Art and culture in Edmonton, Alberta

After several years of renovations, The Art Gallery of Alberta at the heart of downtown Edmonton is once again open to the public. It features two art galleries and a public art plaza, as well as collections that include Canadian and international works by artists ranging from David Milne and Emily Carr to Robert Bateman and Inuit carvings made by the Ikaya Friendship Society.

The museum will also be opening the new Scona Gallery in September 2014. The exhibition space will feature shows dedicated to contemporary works by local, national, and international artists every few months.

The museum features three different galleries including a First Nations Gallery, an Arctic Gallery, and the Museum Gallery which celebrates the province’s early history and also houses several important collections of artifacts.

One of the most popular exhibits at the Royal Alberta Museum is the Keepers of the Athabasca. It showcases Alberta’s ancient glaciers and fossils over 400 million years old.

Art City Festival in Edmonton, Alberta

The Art City Festival is held in Edmonton every year from June 25 to July 1. It is a celebration of visual arts and contemporary art from around the world and coincides with the city’s art scene. In addition to a wide range of cultural activities, the festival includes nightly street parties, a food and beverage festival as well as music events and receptions. The festival was formerly known as Streetworks Edmonton but has recently been renamed Art City Festival for 2014.
