Art and culture in Mayerthorpe, Alberta

Mayerthorpe is a small town located in northern Alberta. It's home to the earliest known paintings in Canada and the third-largest collection of Prairie art in the country.

Aboriginal paintings found at two archaeological sites, one on each side of the Belly River, indicate that these were very important people to the local tribes, more than likely their spiritual leaders or medicine men. They used large boulders for ceremonial dances and as part of their rituals for hunting bison. The majority are from around 6500 BC to 5000 BC but archaeologists have uncovered a great variety of materials dating back thousands more years.

The art of the Stone Age found in this area is predominantly abstract, but some include human and animal forms. The paintings include mostly red, yellow and white colours, which are most likely from minerals, but Aboriginal inhabitants did use vegetable dyes (like berry juice) as well. The more time researchers spend in the area, the more artwork they find. In 1994 an archaeologist discovered red ochre on a large rock face on a hill east of town which appeared to be used for ceremonial purposes. A site northwest of Mayerthorpe also produced many paintings of animals.
