The Upper Karr Recreation Area is located in the Lincoln National Forest off the Sunspot Scenic Byway, and is one of the most picturesque campgrounds in the area. Others take advantage of nearby attractions such as the White Sands National Monument in the east, and the San Andres National Wildlife Refuge. Hiking and biking are also common at this site, as is picnicking.

At a relatively high elevation and conifer/aspen forests, this park enjoys mild weather conditions, and thriving foliage.
