About Elephant Butte

Elephant Butte, New Mexico Campgrounds and RV Parks

Elephant Butte is located directly west of Elephant Butte Lake State Park, New Mexico's largest lake. This area is in the northern edge of the Chihuahuan desert providing warm days, cool nights, and an arid environment.

If you're looking for a scenic "wow factor", Elephant Butte State Park is it. Rise and shine early to capture the majestic beauty of the horizon at sunrise. Equally breathtaking is a post-hike sunset, falling gently behind the mountainous landscape into the 24,500 acres of glistening water below. With 36,500 acres of land, there is no shortage of adventure and exploration, inviting you to boat, fish, and hike the day away!

Looking for a rush? Buffalo is home to some exciting activities known to bring on the adrenaline. Ranging in difficulty, choose from three trails to take you off-road and on the edge. Monticello Canyon Trail explores the wild side of canyon country, a fairly easy ride with gorgeous scenery. Palomas Gap Trail will excite the senses with a more moderate steep climb and switchback-laden descent. Most difficult is the Broad Canyon Trail - a 9-mile loop with large boulders and intense ledges, which requires ample vehicle clearance.

While exploring the beauty outside of your RV park and campground, don't forget to carve out some 'me' time in one of several area mineral hot springs. Riverbend Hot Springs is situated on the banks of the Rio Grande, calling attention to the spectacular views of Turtleback Mountain. La Paloma Hot Springs, with the highest mineral content of any other U.S. spring, provides a relaxing escape in one of two 90+ year old bathhouses. Both locations offer soak-by-the-hour service.
