Before the railroads had been built, packages and correspondence travelled westward from San Antonio and almost certainly came through Maricopa on their way to their intended recipients. The area today has been incorporated as part of the southern edge of the Phoenix metro area, and folks looking for a little nature and a little history are wise to venture this way.
The Sonoran Desert National Monument, with more diverse flora than any other desert in North America, offers hiking, backpacking, stargazing, camping, hunting, motor touring, sightseeing, photography, and horseback riding. Many RVers make their way to the Maricopa area in the winter and shoulder seasons, and full-timer, “snowbird” campers choose this region for its temperate weather.
For some grownup fun, Harrah’s Ak-Chin hotel and casino has poker tournaments, slots, and many other table games. The Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club is a favorite for golfers, while the Ultra Star Multi-tainment Center has games for kids. This part of Arizona is also well known for its off-roading spots for OHV and ATV enthusiasts looking for a shot of adrenaline as they explore the natural beauty of Central Arizona.
