The Joe Skeen BLM is located in Grants, New Mexico and was established in 1987 protect nationally significant ecological, cultural, geological, scenic, scientific and wilderness resources located around the Grants Lava Flows. Visitors to the area can look forward to beautifully preserved sandstone cliffs, canyons and the La Ventana Natural Arch. These natural formations connect the New Mexico terrain to the culture and history of the area's Native American past and present, giving them significance beyond it's asthetic appeal. Adjacent to the Malpais Lava Flow is the Valley of Fires recreation Area. Travelers love this park because from a distance, the hardened lava flows appear barren, but a hike around the formation will reveal a variety of flowers, cacti, bushes and trees common in the Chihuahuan desert. The area is also known to be buzzing with wildlife. Look forward to barberry sheep, bats, mule deer, road runner, great horned owls and a plethora of other bird species uncommon in other parts of the state.
