South Texas is a history buff’s dream. Pay your respects at the Iwo Jima Memorial where the original model for the monument is located, as well as the final resting place of one of the brave souls who participated in the invasion and flag raising. Corporal Harlon Block was killed on Iwo Jima, but lives forever in one of our country’s most iconic moments. The Palo Alto Battlefield National Historic Site preserves the scene of one of the key conflicts during the Mexican War, where future president Zachary Taylor fended off nearly twice as many Mexican soldiers as he had American soldiers, ultimately defeating them across the Rio Grande river at Resaca de la Palma.
Birders should make their way to the Hidalgo Pump House Museum and World Birding Center at Quinta Mazatlan, where rare species like Tropical Kingfishers, Green Jays, and the American Robins make their home in the area. The pump house is also of historical importance, since it’s with these steam pumps that the Magic Valley became farmable. The La Feria Nature Center has well-maintained trails that wind around several bodies of water where birds and critters area make their home. Updated 10/12/2016
