Cruises and fishing charters are available everywhere but some of the area’s most popular are moored in Port Isabel. South of Port Isabel are Boca Chica State Park and Brazos Island State Park. This is a birder’s heaven, and the area is not nearly as crowded as South Padre. This is also where the Rio Grande empties into the Gulf of Mexico, and where the United States ends and Mexico begins.

To the west of town is the Palo Alto Battlefield National Historic Park, where the first shots of the U.S.-Mexican War were fired on the coastal prairie, in a conflict that reshaped the map of the United States forever.
