About Killeen

The Killeen, Temple, Fort Hood metro area, located just over an hour north of Austin, Texas’s state capital, sits adjacent to Fort Hood military base. This region mostly make news for their high-performing high school football programs, but Boomers may recognize Killeen as the place Elvis Presley was sent for basic training. The King actually got to know the metro area better than most soldiers stationed there since he quickly moved off base to live in a private house with his mother. We’re pretty sure Elvis wasn’t much of a camping enthusiast, but if he was, he would have been in luck since there are a couple Killeen RV parks and more than a dozen or so campgrounds near Killeen, in towns in Texas Hill Country, like Leander, Liberty Hills, and Georgetown.

The city of Belton, centrally located in the Killeen-Temple metro area, is the location of the seven-plus acre Summer Fun Water Park. There are also a couple RV parks and sites for cabin camping near Belton. The city is surrounded by several campgrounds in towns like Temple and Salado.

There’s a popular Georgetown campground, Berry Springs RV Park, located about 40 miles south of Killeen. Here, RVers can reserve sites designed specifically for oversized rigs and slide-outs. The park has spectacular Hill Country views and is shaded by 200-year-old oak trees. On-site, Lake Georgetown is stocked with different types of bass, catfish, crappie, and sunfish. And if you have a pooch, this is the park for you. Berry Springs has an off-leash dog run.
