Sundre is a town in the Rocky Mountains of Alberta, Canada located on Highway 40 east of Calgary. There are two ski resorts nearby and a beautiful destination to visit during the summer months. The mountain towns in Alberta are great places to visit during any season!

Sundre is a small town of approximately 3,500 people and there are many nearby attractions to enjoy. The most enjoyable attraction is Sundre Mountain Resort (Sunridge SKI Club) which has over 50 trails spread over two mountains with views of the Rocky Mountains. The ski resort is surrounded by hiking trails, golf courses, and a lake for swimming and boating.

 

In the summer months, it is a great place to visit for hiking, lakeside fishing, golfing, biking and boating. There are also many shops in Sundre that provide hiking maps, fishing gear, and family fun. There is also a nice park and playground for children that are not old enough to ski. We have visited this area for years and always find new things to do!

 

The Sundre Summer Community Centre has a beautiful facility with big-screen TVs for watching hockey games or enjoying the view from their family room.

There aren't many places to go here in Sundre whether it be markets, restaurants, or just to get a quick bite to eat. However for those who are looking for a good meal or even just a snack off the road there is no better place then either of these three.

There is a small restaurant called the Sundre Country Store. This is a nice place to visit as it has a lot of basics. However it doesn't have a real meatloaf, fried chicken, or veal lasagna. But what it does have is all you need to get your meal complete.

If you want something fancy and more gourmet this might not be the best place for you as the only thing that they offer are salads and sandwiches.

Natural Attractions in Sundre

There are many natural attractions in Sundre that visitors absolutely have to see. This is a very raw and beautiful scenery that you won't see in any city.

 

Innisfail Pass has been used for centuries by the local native people. It was used by the First Nations people to get from their winter hunting grounds to summer fishing spots. The pass is about 60km west of Sundre and the road wasn't completed until 1940 (Sundre's population was less than 50 back then).

The Icefields Parkway takes visitors from Banff through Jasper and ends in Lake Louise. It is the most famous road in Canada and many people travel far and wide just to see this sight.

The main attraction of this parkway is the 3 icefields (Jasper, Columbia, Athabasca). They are huge ponds of ice that can be seen from a distance.

There are many trails in the parkway open for hiking, these trails are all well marked with great signs and maps, so visitors don't get lost.
