About Medicine Hat

Medicine Hat is a city in the Canadian province of Alberta. It is located near the TransCanada Highway, 114 kilometres (71 mi) southwest of Calgary and 172 kilometres (107 mi) northeast of Edmonton on the eastern edge of the foothills region in southwestern Alberta. It is surrounded by the County of Cypress.

The city is at the intersection of the Crowsnest Highway (Highway 3). The name comes from the distinctive shape of the nearby South Medicine Hat Ridge, which resembles a hat when viewed from certain angles. The name Medicine Hat is also used to refer to the surrounding area and has been since long before the town was incorporated in 1905.


Medicine Hat is surrounded by Cypress County and is part of census division No. 10.
