Our sites feature 30 amp and 50 amp electrical services while accommodating vehicles up to 45 foot long. If you are joining us in the summer time be sure to take advantage of our pool overlooking the sound and pavilion area. We ask that you swim at your own risk as there is no lifeguard on duty. You may find lounge chairs stretching the length of the pool for your comfort. Of course, if you are looking for more active water sports you can make your way down the docks where you will see that the canal reaches to the sound for anyone interested in setting out on a kayak or canoe to enjoy the natural scenery of Roanoke Island.

If you're looking for a more passive approach to enjoy this beautiful setting, feel free to sit back and relax for a picnic lunch at our pavilion. This covered shelter and the surrounding picnic tables provide the perfect ample space to enjoy quality time with other travelers while recaping a lovely day spent on the outer banks of North Carolina. We cannot wait to have you join us here at The Refuge on Roanoke Island. Whether its for a night or two, we hope to see you soon!

Our nightly rental sites are sites 1-15 located along the pond. Stop in to see our Campground manager in the red roof office located between site 15 and the pool. He will assign your campsite and happily assist with any questions you might have!

Conveniently located in Wanchese, North Carolina, The Refuge is within feet of Village Hardware our local hardware and convenience store. Within a few miles of the famed Wanchese Industrial Park for all your charter fishing needs. If you don't have the day to explore the Outer Banks on one of the world renowned fishing vessels, this is also where you can find the freshest catch on the beach to take home. Just 5 miles north, and you find yourself in Downtown Manteo. A quaint small town with plenty of food and shopping to keep you entertained for the day. Of course, let's not forget the beaches that bring many visitors to the Outer Banks. We are a quick 7 mile drive to Jennette's Pier in Nags Head. Drive South down Route 12 to explore the beaches of Hatteras Island or North towards the 4 X 4 area of Corolla. There is so much to explore here along the Outer Banks of North Carolina and what better jumping off point than Roanoke Island. Enjoy the peaceful serenity of the Marsh by night and tackle all of the adventures the Outer Banks has to offer by day. We cannot wait to see you for your next adventure.

Enjoyed our stay. Clean campground, very nice bathhouse facilities - clean and well maintained. We had a lakeside site to enjoy the lake and the lightening. Definitely recommend staying at the Refuge on Roanoke Island!!

Christopher Konizer

This was a great spot, tucked away from the “touristy” OBX area but close enough to get there if you want. Campsites were spacious and we didn’t feel crowded at all and the hosts were super friendly and helpful with advice on local spots and the like.

Sandy Scalise

Lovely place. Ron the Owner suggested we pull into our site instead of backing in to have a true waterfront experience. Boy was he right! Five minute ride into Manteo too. And……..Good WiFi

First visit to this campground and absolutely loved it!! We definite make it our home away from home now..

Lynne Mason

Great location. Loved being next to the pond. Bathhouse very clean. Had a great experience overall. Only hiccup was we could not access wifi with the information provided.

Gary Baughn

Nice, clean "campground" (in quotes since approx. 80% of inhabitants were seasonal or full time residents) sites are close together, but were fairly accessible. Clean restrooms and showers. No other amenities to speak of. Wifi very poor after 5:00. Catch and release fishing.

John Overstreet

Wonderful place!! Our favorite!!

James Emans

Very quiet campground with a beautiful view of the lake. It is conveniently located for exploring the Outer Bank area. I recommend the site.

Tom Motzel

Very nice park.we had spot 5 right on lake . Level sites. Close to manteo which is a nice small town with a lot of history

Malinda Tenbusch

We could not have been more pleased with our stay at the Refuge. The restrooms are extremely clean and the view over the sound was great to wake up to each morning. TheCampground was very quiet and we will definately be back.

Chastitt Vasquez

Site was level, clean and all in working order. The water had a high pressure (even with our regulator on it), so we chose to fill the tank and run off the pump. Check in was a breeze, just called when we got there, he let us know what site, we backed in and he met us there to go over the parks info. We will definitely will stay again , when we are in the area.

Katherine Heller

Excellent clean and convenient campground. Quiet and well maintained. Ron the manager was super nice. The bathrooms are the cleanest I have ever seen at a campground. Will definitely be back!

Jolynn Wadkins

Very nice and clean stayed with water front view the host Ron was right there when we pulled in to show us our site! Just beware if your not used to wind it’s very windy, lots to do close to everything will stay again

William Evans

It is a nice place very quite. Been 3 times no bad experience yet. Wifi a little slow.

Tony Herdener

A great spot, quiet, off the busy path and the showers/site clean as could be. Ron was a great host-helped us get oriented nicely. O'neal's seafood restaurant a mile and change away is a must as is Poor Richards on the Manteo waterfront. We will be back!

Minter Molello

It was great, quite, peaceful and a true refuge.

Like many commercial campgrounds, the Refuge is geared towards it's seasonal customers. That said, I found our two night stay at site #2 quiet, sheltered from the north wind, and with a nice view of the water. I particularly like the lit board walk that goes out into the salt marsh. Very scenic! That said, a couple of ideas for improvement: 1) the arriving guest has no clue where the 'office' is for check-in. A sign directing the guest to the little shack would be a great addition. 2) as a camper traveling with a small dog, I was little surprised to see the relaxed policy about dogs off leash. Not a big problem but it does lead one to worry about one's step as there are canine landmines all over.

Pamela Houck

Margaret was so helpful in getting the days we needed, she is AHHHMAZING! Ron who runs the campground is truly a blessing & he is a wealth of information too! The campground is so quiet and peaceful and situated beautifully on the water. My husband said the bathhouse was the best he had ever seen on a campground and immaculate! We can't wait to stay again! ♡♡♡♡♡

Gerald Ryznar

Great location, bathhouse, views!

Jerry Walters

Very clean and orderly
