2056 Jim Long Road, St Stephens, AL, 36569

St. Stephens Historical Park is the site of one of the most important historical and archaeological sites in Alabama. St. Stephens was the site of a Spanish fort, an American fort, and the Alabama Territorial Capital. The historic site of Old St. Stephens is a valuable cultural resource that enhances and informs our understanding of the lives of the early settlers along the frontier of our new nation in the 1800s.

In addition to the historical sites, the park boasts over 15 miles of trails for hiking and horseback riding, a 70-acre quarry lake with a sandy beach, fishing, boating, an 18-hole disc golf course, and bird watching. The park has tent camping sites, over 40 RV sites with full hook-ups, and 9 cabins for rent. There is a boat launch into the Tombigbee River and into our lake. Visit St. Stephens for a beautiful getaway hidden in the woods of southwest Alabama. We hope to see you soon!

The views are outstanding. The roads are terrible everything is in disrepair. Laundry room was unusable.

Office ladies very nice and helpful. Some parts of campgrounds need some TLC. Sites are pretty good, but some are very close. We were invited to pick another spot if we didn't like what we had reserved. Driveways leading up to the ridge campground are washing out. Views are better on the ridge. Trails were mostly in decent shape, just holding water in low places. The old town site interesting. Overall, enjoyed the camp, just a shame more funds aren't appropriated for needed improvements.

Our stay was great it was a lot of fun for the whole family. There was a problem with the 30 amp plug when I arrived but the maintenance guy showed up faster than I expected and got it fixed and got our power back going. The only thing there was that may cause an issue is the picnic table cause it didn’t seem to be safe to use cause of the shape the wood was in. It seemed like if you sat at it the boards would break. But all in all it was great stay and we will be going back.

We were a bunch of equestrians, 3 having the first visit. The trails were very well shaded and I loved the technicality in some spots but agree, maintenance would make them nicer for all skill level riders & bring more people back. This place could be one that you told your friends about, and make a really good place to meet. Stalls were a very nice size and the ones we had were in very good shape. Quiet, Peaceful and enjoyed a Lake Walk with the equine which was a blast. "Old Town" made my heart hurt. What a tragic loss of history without maintenance. "Indian Baths" were totally neat. We rode everything but the Red Trail - sunniest trail - and when we lost the trail, we made our own. Left nothing but hoof prints. See you again - soon!

Beautiful and clean facility. Just a few suggestions to make it perfect: 1) Put fans or AC in the bathrooms and showers (it was like a sauna inside) 2) mark the horse/hiking trails a little better so that they were easier to follow and 3) Have ice available for purchase at the office/store. The staff couldn't have been any nicer! We will definitely be back.....when it is cooler!

We made reservations online and had never been to the park before. The rv spot we reserved had picnic tables and other junk/trash in it when we arrived. We didn’t know if the other spots were reserved or not and it was after the store had closed so we moved the stuff in our spot. The horse stall we reserved was being used as a storage unit so we just moved down and hoped those stalls were not reserved. The email said there would be a packet at our site that we needed to sign and return to the office but there was no packet and no one ever came to check to see if we in fact should be where we were. The stalls are in ok shape but need some repair. The park is nice but the trails had some dangerous spot such as bridges in disrepair and not safe for horses to cross.

The park was not kept up and trashy. We also had to leave early due to the electrical outlet not working. We travel to a lot of state parks and this park was just not up to what a state park should be. I would recommend keeping it cleaned better, making the people that live there keep their area clean, keep the beach clean and ensure that all the electrical hook-ups are working properly.

While the camp itself was extremely peaceful, the access roads are in horrible shape and the grounds overall are sadly in a state of disrepair. Much maintenance is needed on all buildings and the historical town was in appalling condition.

The facilities are basic. The historical site was overgrown and the city appeared to be abandoned-again. Hiking trails are poorly marked. We visited in November, so surely not in high season, but a little TLC would make a huge difference.

Bath Houses we’re Horrible! Absolutely disgusting. They marketed the RV spot as if it was right on the water. Can’t even see water from the Lakeview camp site. There was a 200 ft drop off right behind the camp site. Couldn’t go to the water if you wanted to.

Very chilled placed. Only thing is we went to check in and no one was in there all four times we tried. Lol other than that bath houses need some updating. If you y'all need a free quote give me a call.

We went horse camping for the first time at St. Stephens. We loved the history, the lovely trails (though some are in desperate need of maintenance- hence the 4 out of 5 stars), and the septic available at our site. The staff are friendly and helpful. We will be back!

I did an earlier review on St. Stephen historical park…but I forgot to mention that the RV campground “buff view” was not there...the supposed available view was a bit deceptive from the online campground map. We enjoyed hiking and exploring the archaeological areas.

The historical park and excavation/archaeological area was very interesting. Staying at the campground, We visited the camp store twice but it wasn’t open either time. The RV campground definitely needs attention to some road and camp site repair work. It was a bit unkept. Drive into town to visit the museum but was disappointed it wasn’t open the three days we were there. But the historical park was fascinating.
