A beautiful island campground, thickly forested with spruce, fir, and birch, was created over 60 years ago, on Sunshine Island in Maine.
Under the name, Sunshine Campground, it hosted people from all over the world and delivered the spirit and essence of this ancient, abundant land – that so many ancestors had roamed and celebrated before.
As far as through the 90’s, it was open to the public, but then sat, alone, for 20 years, waiting for someone to revive it and bring it back to the world.
Wolf, our trusted camp manager runs the day to day operations of the campground, bringing a lifetime of his camping expertise and knowledge. He walked this same land years ago, unknowing what the future would hold. He now lives at the campground, giving nature tours, leading the community fire pits, and maximizing our campers’ experiences.
Caleb Scott, our founder, has been coming to the island his entire life with deep roots going back many generations. He is a true lover of nature and had visions of re-establishing a campground in Deer Isle, formally known as “Sunshine Campground” which has not been in operation for 15 years. As Henry David Thoreau once stated, “Go confidently in the directions of your dreams. Live the life you’ve imagined.” That quote resonated in his mind and he decided to take a leap of faith to reopen the campground by quitting his job as an accountant.
Together, a symbiotic relationship was formed during a life changing conversation on a bus ride in Maine. A year later, Four Acre Woods Campground was founded.
Four Acre Woods is a truly special place. Untouched for over a decade, the campground’s beauty was naturally carved into 12 private and spacious sites. We want to share this hidden gem with the island community, curious travelers, and true nature lovers. A peaceful place where memories are formed, allowing society to take a step back and focus on what truly matters in life, coming together and spending time with the people you care the most about.
After opening on July 1st 2020, the land is finally back to sharing all of her beauty and spirit with the people.
